Description

This black and white snapshot pictures a study circle at the John C. Campbell Folk School circa 1930, and shows the manner in which teaching took place at the school from 1927 when the first classes were held through the 1940s. The study circle is a process by which information is exchanged based upon the Danish folk school theory. At Danish folk schools, upon which the Campbell Folk School is modeled, learning and teaching is based upon the "living word" where discussions take place in group situations. This photograph was taken by Daisy Dame, sister of school founder Olive Dame Campbell.
