Description
In response to a request in 1954 from Louise Pitman, director of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, traditional woodworker Shadrach Mace sent her this letter along with a series of snapshots with captions on the back describing the processes he used to hand craft his chairs. The letter describes the family tree of chair makers. Mace writes about his "foreparents" coming from Ireland and eventually settling "in the face of the blue ridge in McDowell County," North Carolina. Shadrach's grandfather, Jesse, began making chairs and taught his son, Copeny, the craft. The chairs sold for $.50 each. Shadrach began helping his father when he "got big enough."
