Description

This three minute interview segment featuring father and son blacksmiths Bea and Mike Hensley was produced in 1991 by UNC-TV. Hosted by Bill Friday for the North Carolina People series, the video was shot in the Hensley workshop in Spruce Pine, N.C. Bea and Mike discuss the master/apprenticeship process in this segment. Also Mike discusses hammer language, a way the master blacksmith communicates with the apprentice through sounds and motions on the anvil. Hammer language is often noted for the melodious sounds it produces.
