Description
This donkey carved in apple wood is a rare example of a carving made by Marguerite Butler Bidstrup. Educated at Vassar, Marguerite Butler came south to teach at Kentucky's Pine Mountain Settlement School. She traveled to Denmark with Olive Campbell to study Danish folk schools and assisted in the founding of the John C. Campbell Folk School in 1925. Butler served on the school's board and was treasurer and assistant director at various times. She married the Folk School's farm manager and folk dance instructor, Georg Bidstrup, in 1936.
