Description
This small rabbit by Carmen Beaver Fleming (1919-1995) is carved from buckeye, her favorite wood. Fleming learned to carve in 1937, influenced by her brother Nolan Beaver, a master carver. She married Pearlie Fleming and raised five children, moving frequently because of her husband's work. When the family moved back to the Brasstown area, Fleming took up carving for the John C. Campbell Folk School and sold her work through the Folk School's woodcarving cooperative that became known as the Brasstown Carvers. She carved daily beginning at 5:30 a.m., dividing her time between carving, housework, and gardening.
