Description
This photograph of Katherine Pettit was taken by Doris Ulmann in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Pettit was founder of Pine Mountain Settlement School and Hindman Settlement School in Kentucky. Pettit taught natural vegetable dyeing. Wilmer Stone Viner published "The Katherine Pettit Book of Vegetable Dyes" in 1946 after moving to Saluda, N.C. from Kentucky. Through this book, Pettit's dyeing recipes influenced craft practices in western North Carolina.
