Description

The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild met for its annual membership meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 12, 1937. Meeting minutes generally contain committee reports, financial statements, new members, announcements of regional events, and discussion about special issues facing the organization. This particular meeting began with financial reports. Lucy Morgan reported for the Membership and Standards Committee and described her meeting in Washington D.C. with Mr. Cammerer about the sale of craft items in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Allen Eaton also spoke on this subject. Eloise Steele from Nova Scotia, Canada spoke about the importance of regional crafts. Clementine Douglas read a statement from Frances Stoddard about opening a shop in Cashiers, N.C. Board resolutions on the expense and problems of such a shop were presented. Amendments to the Guild's constitution were voted on. Frances L. Goodrich was made a life member of the Guild. Eaton spoke about the Rural Arts exhibition. Morgan announced the weaving institutes to be held at Penland. Eaton spoke about the national craft conference being planned. Also included were a financial statement, an attendance list, and a membership list. The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild was founded in 1930 as the Southern Mountain Handicraft Guild. The name was changed to the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild in 1933 and again in the 1990s to the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
