Description

The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild met for its fall membership meeting in Higgins, North Carolina on October 27 and 28, 1938. Meeting minutes generally contain committee reports, financial statements, new members, announcements of regional events, and discussion of special issues facing the organization. In this particluar meeting Frank C. Foster reported on the installation of the Goodrich Collection at the Asheville Normal and Teachers College. Paul C. Johnson spoke about the Southern Highlanders discussions with the Virginia Skyline Company, a concessioner for the National Park Service, regarding sales of crafts. Isadora Williams spoke about having a Guild exhibition in Knoxville, Tenn. Martha Robinson spoke about the work being done at the John and Mary R. Markle Handicraft School, where the meeting was being held. O.J. Mattil led discussion of a proposed exhibit in Trenton, N.J. There was also discussion of the exhibit for the New York World's Fair (1939). Edna Groves spoke for a "group visiting from the Cherokee Reservation." O.J. Mattil introduced discussion of the Wages and Hours Law. The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild was founded in 1930 as the Southern Mountain Handicraft Guild. The name was changed to the Southern Highland Handicraft Guid in 1933 and again in the 1990s to the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
