Description
The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild met for its annual membership meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 4, 1943. Meeting minutes generally contain committee reports, financial statements, new members, announcements of regional events, and discussion about special issues facing the organization. At this particular meeting there were only 25 people present [war shortages made travel more difficult.]. The Education Committee offered their standards for Apprentice Craftsmen and Craftsmen membership. These are included in minutes. There were two amendments proposed for the Guild constitution concerning accepting individual members as voting members. A third amendment was proposed to be voted on at the fall meeting, which would define "member." A policy statement concerning when to use the Guild Seal was discussed and approved. A new site for the Museum Collection was discussed. The members voted to be part of the American Craftsmen Cooperative Council. There was discussion about the merger of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild and the Southern Highlanders. George R. Bent recorded the minutes. The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild was founded in 1930 as the Southern Mountain Handicraft Guild. The name was changed to the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild in 1933 and again in the 1990s to the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
