Description

Penland School of Handicrafts, now Penland School of Crafts, held its 1937 summer Weaving Institute July 19 through August 21, 1937. This group of materials documents the courses taught and the instructors and students who attended. The documents include the 1) "Report to Mr. Coggin: 1937 Weaving Institute; 2) "Descriptive Report of the 1937 Penland Weaving Institute"; 3) handwritten list of students giving their home towns and occupations. 4) "Students of 1937 Weaving Institute", a carbon copy typewritten list of students, visitors, and teachers giving their occupations and addresses, plus a page describing extracurricular activities that took place during the institute; and 5) "Students Enrolled at Penland Weaving Institute" a carbon copy typewritten list of students and their home towns and instructors and what they taught. The report to Mr. Coggin and the descriptive report of the institute was documentation Penland was required to submit in order to receive funding for salaries from the federal Smith-Hughes Act which was administered through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction by George W. Coggin.
