Description

This woven cloth sample notebook was originally compiled by Helen Wilmer Stone (ca. 1891-1978) presumably while she was working at the Pine Mountain Settlement School in Kentucky. The notebook contains samples of woven fabrics glued to notebook pages; sometimes the samples are annotated as to type of fabric, dye used, and the source of the weaver or county in Kentucky. The inscriptions inside the front cover indicates this notebook was passed from Stone, to Clementine Douglas, who knew Stone from Kentucky and who opened a weaving shop called the Spinning Wheel in Asheville in 1926. Stone published several articles on natural dyes and dyeing, as well as the "Katherine Pettit Book of Vegetable Dyes." prior to moving to Saluda, N.C. in the 1920s. She moved to Saluda , N.C. in the 1920s and married, changing her name to Wilmer Stone Viner.
