Description
This jacket was made from linsey-woolsey fabric that was hand woven by Ann Shelton, probably in the 1890s. Shelton lived in the Shelton-Laurel Community in Madison County, North Carolina where Frances Goodrich served as a Presbyterian missionary and founded Allanstand Cottage Industries. Shelton did beautiful weaving, according to Goodrich. The family raised sheep and spun and dyed the wool themselves. It was woven on a linen/cotton warp. The jacket is lined with silk, has sleeves which are full at the shoulder, and features a narrow at the wrist.
