Description

Born in Pelzer, South Carolina, Martha Coffee came to the Brasstown area in 1930 and learned to carve from Murrial Martin, woodcarving instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School. Coffee sold her carvings through the school's woodcarving cooperative that became known as the Brasstown Carvers. She learned to carve her beautiful camels used in nativity scenes under Jack Hall and has carved skunks, dogs and chickens in many poses and sizes. Coffee has given many carving demonstrations throughout the region. This photograph was taken from a booklet published by the John C. Campbell Folk School in 1990 titled "The Brasstown Carvers" with text by Bill Biggers, photographs by Werner Kahn and Bill Biggers.
