Description

This photograph depicts Dexter Dockery and wife Hazel Dockery carving in their home. Dexter learned to carve under Murray Martin and Jack Hall at the John C. Campbell Folk School. After years of sanding Dexter's carvings, Hazel learned to carve from Dexter. They sold their work through the Folk School's woodcarving cooperative known as the Brasstown Carvers. They are known for their graceful and refined forms, make their own patterns and carve predominately in butternut; some are collaborative pieces. Both Dexter and Hazel have given demonstrations of their talents throughout the southeast and sold their work from Highlands, North Carolina, to Gatlinburg and Chattanooga. This photograph was taken from a booklet published by the John C. Campbell Folk School in 1990 titled "The Brasstown Carvers" with text by Bill Biggers, photographs by Werner Kahn and Bill Biggers.
