Description
This photograph depicts Helen Gibson starting to carve on a blank. Gibson learned to carve under John C. Campbell Folk School instructor Murrial Martin and took additional lessons from Jack Hall. She has sold her work through the school's woodcarving cooperative know as the Brasstown Carvers. Gibson is a second generation Brasstown carver, and served as the Folk School's Resident Carver and Mentor for the Apprentice Carvers. She has taught numerous classes and workshops and given demonstrations throughout the southeast. Gibson is nationally known for her crèche figures of wise men, shepherds, Mary and Joseph. Her favorite wood is holly, her most difficult and challenging figures are the shepherds with crooks. This photograph was taken from a booklet published by the John C. Campbell Folk School in 1990 titled "The Brasstown Carvers" with text by Bill Biggers, photographs by Werner Kahn and Bill Biggers.
