Description
This picture shows woodcarver Ruth Fleming Hawkins sitting on her front porch. Hawkins was born near Hayesville, North Carolina and started carving when she was 20 years old. She sold her work through the John C. Campbell Folk School's woodcarving cooperative know as the Brasstown Carvers. Working primarily in holly wood, Hawkins made all of her own patterns and was nationally recognized for her angel and child figures. This photograph was taken from a booklet published by the John C. Campbell Folk School in 1990 titled "The Brasstown Carvers" with text by Bill Biggers, photographs by Werner Kahn and Bill Biggers.
