Description

Clara Maude Cobb Hilton (Mrs. A. E. Hilton), her grandson, Bill Henley, and her daughter, Bill's mother, Mildred Hilton Shuford, gather around the potter's wheel at the Hilton Pottery booth. Clara Hilton (1885-1969) learned to run a pottery when she married into Hilton family of Marion North Carolina in 1903. After her husband's death she continued to work with clay, making dolls and figurines. Her daughter Mildred made fabric "Tommy dolls." Bill Henley continued the family's traditional work. The photograph was taken by Edward L. Dupuy at the 1951 Craftsman's Fair of the Southern Highlands in Asheville, North Carolina.
