Description

William Perry Smith, commonly known as Willie Smith, lost both legs in a train accident. He was able to support his family, shown here with a grandchild, with the earnings he made from carving dolls and roosters. The photograph was taken by Edward L. Dupuy at the 1951 Craftsman's Fair of the Southern Highlands in Asheville, North Carolina, where a homestead scene was arranged on the auditorium stage.
