Description

This staged photograph shows Sally Sparks molding bayberry candles on the porch of the Weaving Cabin near Penland, North Carolina. The photograph was taken around 1930 by Bayard Wootten. Hand-molded bayberry candles were produced and sold by the Penland Weavers and Potters from 1930 until around 1967. The candles measured 10" long and were usually sold one or two to a box. Bayberry candles are made from wax extracted from the berries of the bayberry shrub.
