Fiber tools: skein winder

Dublin Core

Title

Fiber tools: skein winder

Subject

Spinning -- Appalachian Region, Southern
Textile machinery

Description

This skein winder was likely created in the 1800s. After fiber was spun it needed to be transferred to a skein for ease of handling. The thread was run from the spinning bobbin and tied to one arm of the winder. Two holes at one end of the board may have held pegs for bobbins. This compact style of winder could have been used on a table, and was easier to store than the free standing winders. The creator of this skein winder is unknown.
