Title
Weaving on old loom "The Spinning Wheel" Asheville, N.C.
Description
This postcard depicts the Spinning Wheel, a craft outlet founded and operated by Clementine Douglas in Asheville, North Carolina. The Spinning Wheel was housed in a log cabin outfitted with artifacts meant to show buyers how crafts could be used in the home. Douglas was an expert weaver and dyer, but also commissioned works by local women. The small spinning wheel on the hearth is a low wheel, used to spin flax. In the foreground, a weaver is working on an "old" loom. During the craft revival, these large and cumbersome traditional looms were replaced by smaller, lightweight looms that took up less floor room. The postcard was written by Clementine Douglas and sent to Frances Goodrich in 1932.
