Description
This postcard depicts the Spinning Wheel, a craft outlet founded and operated by Clementine Douglas in Asheville, North Carolina. The Spinning Wheel was housed in a log cabin outfitted with artifacts meant to show buyers how crafts could be used in the home. Douglas was an expert weaver and dyer, but also commissioned works by local women. The large spinning wheel on the porch of the cabin is a high wheel, used to spin cotton or wool. The back of the postcard includes a note that Douglas wrote to Frances Goodrich, while she was summering in New Hampshire. Goodrich was founder of Allanstand Cottage Industries, and Douglas refers to its success. She also asks if Goodrich has read Allen Eaton’s book, Immigrant Gifts to American Life. The postcard was written by Clementine Douglas and mailed to Julia Goodrich in 1932.
