Description
A member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Virgil Crowe is known for realistically detailed woodcarvings. He studied woodcarving with Amanda Crowe during high school and, later, began to carve animal forms. He uses local animals as models, rather than relying on more generalized images. Inspired by Sim Jessan’s snake mask, in the mid-1980s, he began to carve masks himself. Crowe is involved in the entire carving process, including the making of particular tools.
