Description

“The Remarkable Flora of the Great Smoky Mountains” is a 14-page booklet written by B.W. Wells. Bertram Whittier Wells (1884-1978), a distinguished professor of botany at North Carolina State University. The original photographs included in the booklet are in the Hunter Library’s George Masa Collection. Penciled notations in the booklet are believed to have been made by George Masa. The photographs in the booklet were originally thought to be taken by Masa; these are now attributed to Wells. The booklet was published in the 1920s by the North Carolina National Park Commission and Great Smoky Mountains, Inc., two organizations that promoted the idea of designating the Great Smoky Mountains as a national park.
