On the reverse of this image is written, "The Applachian Trail passes this dam ( The Cheoah Dam, of the Aluminum Co. of America, across the Little Tennessee River - at Tapoco, N.C.). The Cheoah River (on which the Santeetlah dam is built) empties into the Little Tennessee River just blow this dam and power house. It could be seen in the right foreground except for the dense foliage. A.G. Roth Apr. 22, 1933." The photograph is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The photographer, Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974), was an employee of the Southern Railroad and an avid photographer. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Roth in December 1924.
