Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "Yellow Creek Mountain (Appalachian Trail follows its crest) as seen from Appalachian Trail about one mile north of Tapoco, N.C. Yellow Creek Mountain runs eastward 10 mi. from Tapoco. The Appalachian Trail swings southward over the Cheoah Mts almost to Nantahala Gorge, thence parallel to, and just north of, the Gorge for 8 or 10 miles thence into the Gorge to Wesser, N.C. - Roth July 24, 1932." The photograph is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The photographer, Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974), was an employee of the Southern Railroad and an avid photographer. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Roth in December 1924.
