On the reverse of this image is written, "Looking north eastward from Yellow Creek Mountain we get a glimpse of N.C. highway (from Deals Gap to Bryson City) No. 288, along the Little Tennessee River near (above) Rymer's Ferry Power House of the Aluminum Co. The Great Smokies lie to the north (left) of this road. N.C. # is a maintained dirt and natural gravel road running from Deals Gap (Tenn. N.C.) to Bryson City, .N.C. CCCampbell - Roth Aug 28, 1932." The photograph is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The photographer, Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974), was an employee of the Southern Railroad and an avid photographer. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Roth in December 1924.
