Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "N.C. Highway #108 along the Cheoah River between Tapoco and Santeetlah - as seen from west end of Yellow Creek Mountain Appalachian Trail. A.G. Roth May 29,1933." The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974) took this photogrpah and was one of the founders of the hiking club. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
