Description
This view of Yellow Creek valley and Hangover was taken from Appalachian Trail at Yellow Creek Gap on April 2, 1933 by Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974). The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Roth, an employee of the Southern Railroad and an avid photographer, in December 1924. Apparently, Roth did not print his images as these are stamped “Jim Thompson Co. Knoxville Master Photo Finishers,” indicating they were probably printed by fellow hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976).
