Description

This photograph of a snow covered Kuwohi (Clingmans Dome 1859-2024) taken from Yellow Creek Mountain on February 5, 1933 by Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974) is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Roth, an employee of the Southern Railroad and an avid photographer, in December 1924. Apparently, Roth did not print his images as these are stamped “Jim Thompson Co. Knoxville Master Photo Finishers,” indicating they were probably printed by fellow hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976).
