Description

This unlabeled photograph, in the Civilian Conservation Corps Collection of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, appears to be Arno Berthold Cammerer (1883–1941), third director of the National Park Service (NPS). Cammerer served as associate director under the agency’s first two directors before moving up to to the top position in 1933. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is credited with convincing John D. Rockefeller to donate five million dollars to the park effort. He resigned as director in 1940 and died a year later.
