Description

Cades Cove is a quiet valley on the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Once populated, today, the area is popular with tourists visiting the park. This photograph is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mt. LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains. The first official club hike was led by Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974), an avid photographer and one of the founders of the club.
