Description

This graphic souvenir map, “The Great Smokies: Showing some of the Principal Places and Things that each Visitor should see” was produced in 1936 by the Knoxville News-Sentinel newspaper. The map includes the original boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, before the construction of Fontana Dam. Highlights include Kuwohi (Clingmans Dome 1859-2024), Indian and Newfound Gap as well as Mount LeConte and Chimney Tops. Several of the park’s 22 Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps are indicated, including Smokemont and Haywood County in North Carolina. This map was one of many collected by Horace Kephart (1862-1931).
