Description
Pisgah Forest was purchased by the National Forest Reservation Commission from Edith Vanderbilt, widow of George Vanderbilt. The tract was originally part of the larger “Biltmore Forest” on which the Biltmore Estate was built. After the death of her husband, Edith Vanderbilt offered the land at a reduced rate, stating, “Private ownership of forest land is a public trust.” Pisgah Forest is also known as the “Cradle of Forestry,” as it was the first school of forestry in the U.S. This map was one of many collected by Horace Kephart (1862-1931).
