On the reverse of the image is written, "Along the Tennessee - North Carolina state line from Jump Off to Newfound Gap - May 5, 1928. This is at Newfound Gap - before the highway (Tenn. 71 & N.C. 107) was built. One of the engineers' grade stakes in seen left of the hikers in the foreground." The picture is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, an organization that formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924.
