Description
On the reverse of this image is written, "On the un-trailed Chapman Creek Oct. 1931 left to right Argus Tresidder, W.W. Stanley, Harvey Broome, Carlos C. Campbell, Brockway Crouch, Dutch Roth, Walter Berry. Picture snapped by Marshall Wilson." Chapman Creek is officially known as Chapman Prong. The photograph is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, an organization that formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
