Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "For our second night's camp (Aug. 8) we had to cut a place in this jungle of undergrowth for our tents and another place to cook and eat. This is about 4 or 5 miles west of Low Gap - with no semblance of a trail. The 'customers' in this picture, left to right: Chas. Cornforth, Guy Frizzell, Carlos Campbell, Chas, Gibson -Warner Hall photo 8-9-32." Warner Hall was a key figure in preserving what became Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co."
