Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "Time out on the Sawtooth Range, where the state line crest is only a few inches wide, to enjoy good views into Porter Flats and Greenbrier and to the Jump Off and Mt. LeConte Bottom to top: Charles Cornforth, Harvey Broome, Carter Whittaker, Charles Gibson, Guy Frizzell, Walter Berry, Carlos Campbell - Warner Hall 8-12-32." Warner Hall was a key figure in preserving what became Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
