Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "You had better have a 'camping permit' before camping in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Get it from Maj. J. Ross Eakin, Supt., at Gatlinburg. Here we see Park Patrolman John B. Carroll reading Harvey Broome's permit on the 9-day hike thru the Smokies. left to right: - Walter Berry (seated), Harvey Broome, Carlos Campbell, John B. Carroll, and Frank Lollis (patrolman's helper) made between Clingman’s Dome + Siler's Bald 8-13-32 --- Warner Hall." Warner Hall was a key figure in preserving what became Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. In 2024 Clingmans Dome was restored to its original name of Kuwohi. The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co."
