Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "Westward from Eagle Rocks at sunset. This view is marvelous at any time but inspiring when we saw it. Clingmans Dome, Mt. Collins, Mt. Kephart, the Jump-off and The Boulevard (the high ridge from Jump-Off to Mt. LeConte) in the background. --Warner Hall 8-10-32." Warner Hall was a key figure in preserving what became Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. In 2024 Clingmans Dome was restored to its original name of Kuwohi. The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
