Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "Looking eastward from White Rock we see the 'surge tank' at the Waterville, N.C. powerhouse. Max Patch and mountains of the Unaka National Forest appear in the background. -Roth Aug 7, 1932. " Today, White Rock is known as Mount Cammerer. The picture is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Eligible for entry in Master Snap photo contest. Ask Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
