Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "From White Rock (Sharp Top) we got a good view of the Tenn. - N.C. state line westward to Mt. Guyot, with Mt. Chapman peeping above the 'saddle' at the left of Guyot. Low Gap is seen in the center, with 'Cosby View', 'Ross Knob" and 'Hell Ridge' stretching out toward Guyot. 'Old Black', at the head of 'Pinnacle Lead' - the Sevier - Cocke county boundary at the state line junction, is immediately to the night of Guyot. - Roth Aug.7,1932 " Today, White Rock is known as Mount Cammerer. The picture is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Eligible for entry in Master Snap photo contest. Ask Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
