Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "When the sun became too hot for us or when we were stopped by sheer exhaustion while treking wearily along 'Hell Ridge' (8-9-32) we had only the scantily leaved fire-cherry, blackberry briars and an occasional laurel or small balsam for shade. One man was seen to pull 15-inch ferns over his face for shade. Mt. Guyot is in the center background, with Old Black at the right. Deep Creek was tantalizing in full view most of the time. L. to R. Warren Hall, 'Parson' Gibson, Carlos Campbell and Carter Whittaker - Warner Hall photo 8-9-32." Warner Hall was a key figure in preserving what became Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co."
