Description

This 1927 photograph of a group of hikers under Alum Cave Bluffs holding a sign reading "Indian Gap Hotel" is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. On the reverse of the image is written, "Hikers under Alum Cave Bluffs - Sept. 11, 1927. Left to right Frank Oats, Rebecca Dodson, Donald Crockett, Elsie Wayland, Clara Gartrell, Elizabeth Davies. Brockway Crouch." The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
