Description

This 1925 photograph of Harvey Broome on Beech Flats is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Beech Flats is along the Indian Gap Trail, the original pass through the Great Smoky Mountains. In the mid-1930s it was replaced by Newfound Gap Road two miles to the east. Newfound Gap Road is also highway 441. Club member Harvey Benjamin Broome (1902-1968) was a Knoxville attorney and avid conservationist who advocated for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
