Description

This 16-page booklet, “Western North Carolina R.R. (Railroad) Scenery: Land of the Sky,” was produced in 1885. In 1880, the first train arrived in Asheville; by 1894, the Murphy Branch of the Southern Railway was built, connecting Asheville to the far western part of the state. This brochure promotes the scenic beauty of the region while promoting its accessibility by rail. The booklet contains many photographs by Herbert W. Pelton (1879-1961), a photographer active in Asheville in the early part of the 20th century. Pelton produced landscapes of the region including panoramic shots, a rather rare format for the times. He partnered with photographer George Masa to operate the short-lived Photo-Craft Shop in the 1920s, before moving to Washington, D.C.
