Description
Arno Berthold Cammerer (1883–1941) was the third director of the National Park Service (NPS). He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is credited with convincing John D. Rockefeller to donate five million dollars to the park effort. Here, Cammerer is pictured with members of the Appalachian Park Commission atop Gregory Bald. The Commission made a few trips into the Appalachian Mountains to determine the best location to site a national park.
