James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976) was a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians. He was an active member of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. Thompson is pictured at right. The back of this photograph is labeled George Barber; this may mean Barber is at left or it may mean he took the photograph.
