Description
In a second draft of a letter to President Andrew Johnson, written in June of 1866, William Williams Stringfield petitions for the President's intervention on his indictment for treason, a crime punishable by execution, and for which he will stand trial at The United States Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. Stringfield cites the Proclomation of Amnesty, a document passed by Abraham Lincoln pardoning soldiers of the Confederate Army under the rank of Colonel (in which Stringfield is included, being a Lieutenant Colonel). Stringfield also mentions his application for pardon he submitted in June of last year, including the required Oath of Amnesty, for which he received no reply. In light of this, Stringfield has enclosed a renewed application in his letter, reciting the Oath and signing it, in hopes of a swift reply by the President granting him clemency.
