In a letter to his future wife, Maria Melvina Love on July 8, 1865, William Williams Stringfield writes as a suitor asking for Love's hand in marriage. In an attempt to win her affections, Stringfield mentions his high standing reputation with the families of Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. He reminds Love of their first encounter, four years previously, just before the onset of the Civil War in which Stringfield was enlisted. Stringfield states that the thought of his home, his family, and Ms. Love convinced him to answer the call to arms, and that these thoughts are what carried him through the hardships endured in the Confederate Army. Stringfield uses the remainder of the letter to assure Love that he is ready for the life of a married man and implores Love to write him again.
